On the 11th, a man in his 60s collapsed from cardiac arrest at Gayang Station, saved by a nurse performing CPR on her way home from work
On the 11th, a nurse from Seoul Red Cross Hospital, Kwon Young-seon, was awarded a certificate of appreciation and a monetary reward on the 28th for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and saving a man in his 60s who collapsed while waiting for an express train at Gayang Station on Seoul Metro Line 9.
On her way home, Kwon Young-seon recognized the emergency when a man in his 60s collapsed at Gayang Station. She asked nearby people to bring an automated external defibrillator (AED) and requested a 119 emergency call. She then performed CPR on the unconscious man in cardiac arrest. About a minute after starting CPR, the man regained consciousness and was handed over to 119 emergency responders along with station staff who arrived after the call.
Despite the difficulties of face-to-face contact due to COVID-19, Kwon Young-seon showed great courage to save the man and perfectly followed the CPR procedures outlined in the cardiac arrest manual. This act moved many people.
Receiving the certificate of appreciation, Kwon Young-seon said, “Although I did what was natural, I feel embarrassed by the excessive attention and praise. I will continue to strive to live a exemplary life.”
Jo Moon-cheol, Head of Management at Seoul Metro Line 9, said, “Thanks to courageous people like Ms. Kwon, a major accident was averted. It is fortunate to be able to share warm news during a very difficult time for the entire nation due to COVID-19. Line 9 staff will also do their best to respond to emergencies occurring on site.”
Furthermore, Seoul Metro Line 9 stated that it will continue to discover and promote citizens’ good deeds within Line 9, like the case of Kwon Young-seon, and strive to create a warm society.
