'K-Content Report' Meets Korean Classical Novels...Jongno-gu Special Lecture on 'Stories of Era, Society, and Life in Old Novels'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will operate a special lecture series where participants can deeply learn about Korean classical novels, which are a treasure trove of K-content such as Korean films and Korean literature, every Thursday at 7:30 PM from June 3 to September 23 at the Woori Sori Library.

This lecture series, titled "Stories of the Era, Society, and People in Old Novels," will be held over a total of 15 sessions.

The sessions are designed as meaningful times to introduce the concepts, styles, and works of classical novels created before the modern era, as well as to explore the lives and environments of their creators.

In particular, the lectures are highly anticipated as 15 researchers will lead the sessions in collaboration with Dolbegae Publishing and the Korean Classical Novel Society.

Starting with Lecture 1 (June 3) "Strange Encounters, Fantastic Love," which covers the birth of early novels, the series continues with Lecture 2 (June 10) "What Happened in the Afterlife? Kim Si-seup's 'Geumo Sinhwa'," Lecture 3 (June 17) "Even in Dreams? The Intellectual’s Dream Journey, Mongyurok," Lecture 4 (June 24) "Because of Love? 17th Century Romance Novels 'Unyeongjeon' and 'Jusaengjeon'," and continues until September 23.

The lecture schedule and topics can be checked on the Jongno Cultural Foundation website, and anyone from teenagers and above can apply through the Jongno Cultural Foundation or Woori Sori Library. Participation is completely free of charge.

In June, the lectures will be conducted online to comply with social distancing measures, and depending on the COVID-19 situation, in-person classes at Woori Sori Library will be held concurrently.

Later, a classical novel reading, recitation, and transcription club will also be operated with the participants.

Meanwhile, this lecture series is a result of Jongno Cultural Foundation being selected as an executing institution for the '2021 Reading Academy Project' organized by the Korea Publication Industry Promotion Agency.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong said, "At a time when the importance of the cultural industry is growing, the value of Korean classical novels is truly great," adding, "I hope people listen to the stories of the era, society, and lives contained in old novels, explore the new possibilities of classical novels, and take pride in our culture."
