[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] On the 28th (local time), local media reported that police in the UK raided a building suspected to be an illegal cannabis cultivation farm, only to find it was a cryptocurrency mining site.

According to reports, the West Midlands Police in the UK uncovered a cryptocurrency mining site in an industrial complex in the Sandwell area on the 18th.

At the time, the police received a tip that a building was suspected to be a cannabis farm and launched an investigation. The police investigated how many people were coming in and out of the building and used drones to detect significant heat coming from the building.

The police assumed the heat was coming from alternative lighting used to secretly cultivate cannabis indoors and raided the site.

However, upon entering the building, what was found was not cannabis but about 100 computers. The police confirmed that computers equipped with ventilation devices were lined up at the scene. It was a place for mining cryptocurrency, not a cannabis farm.

A police official said, "It was completely different from what we expected. It had all the characteristics of a cannabis cultivation facility, but in reality, it was the second cryptocurrency mining site we have seen in our jurisdiction," according to foreign media.

While cryptocurrency mining itself is not illegal, the problem was that the site was stealing electricity from others to supply the massive power needed. The equipment was seized. The police estimated that millions of won worth of electricity was stolen and said they are conducting further investigations.
