[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Provincial Police Agency (Chief Kang Hwangsu) announced on the 28th that they have apprehended a voice phishing collector who defrauded over 60 million won from four victims.
This case involved deceiving victims by promising to provide low-interest loans immediately upon repayment of existing loans, thereby defrauding over 60 million won.
After receiving the report, Jeju police analyzed CCTV footage and arrested the suspect within two hours, confiscating 8.5 million won in cash from the suspect.
The confiscated money will be returned to the victims through restitution procedures.
The suspect confessed that while job hunting on an online job advertisement site, they saw an ad for a “high-paying part-time job with a daily wage of 150,000 won,” contacted an unidentified suspect, and committed the crime in exchange for 2% commission of the collected money.
Jeju police are making every effort to eradicate voice phishing crimes in the province through organic cooperation between investigation and criminal departments, and awarded a commendation to Detective Moon Jae-hyun of the Eastern Police Station’s Criminal Division for his contribution to the arrest.
Kang Hwangsu, Chief of Jeju Provincial Police Agency, stated, “We will never tolerate the outflow of money earned through the blood and sweat of our residents,” and added, “We will mobilize all our capabilities to prevent and apprehend voice phishing to create a clean Jeju.”
