[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Engineering announced on the 28th that the cumulative sewage treatment capacity of the sewage treatment plants operated by the company in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, including Suji Respia, has exceeded 600 million tons.
Suji Respia is a large-scale sewage treatment facility covering 124,560㎡ (approximately 30,000 pyeong) located in the downtown area of Yongin City. Samsung Engineering completed it in 2010 and is responsible for its operation until 2030.
Samsung Engineering has constructed and operates a total of 12 sewage treatment plants in Yongin City, with a combined daily sewage treatment capacity of about 140,000 tons. The company explained that the amount of sewage treated at these facilities over the past 12 years reaches 600 million tons, which is about 2.5 times the total reservoir capacity of 240 million tons of Paldang Dam.
Samsung Engineering applied the 'PADDO' system, a patented technology that fully undergrounds sewage treatment facilities, reducing the use of water treatment chemicals while minimizing the generation of nitrogen and phosphorus that cause eutrophication in rivers. It also supplies 30,000 tons of river maintenance water daily to the upper streams of Tancheon and Seongbokcheon, which flow into the nearby Han River basin, playing a role in water resource recycling and preserving the surrounding ecosystem.
Suji Respia has created resident convenience facilities on the ground, including a community center, sports center, art hall, soccer field, athletics track, and park. There is also a landmark 120-meter-high observation tower. Based on this, in 2008, it won the East Asia-Pacific region design category at the 'Project Innovation Award' hosted by the International Water Association (IWA).
