The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 26th to replace the term 'booster shot' with the Korean term 'chuga jeopjong' (additional vaccination). They also suggested 'nohwa gokseon' (aging curve) as the Korean alternative for 'aging curve.'
A booster shot refers to an additional vaccination given after a certain period to enhance the vaccine's effectiveness. The selection of the alternative term 'chuga jeopjong' reflected survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 17th to the 19th with about 2,000 participants, 94.8% of respondents answered that it was appropriate.
The aging curve refers to the phenomenon where physical performance declines after reaching a certain age. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language decided on 'nohwa gokseon' as the alternative term at the Saemal Meeting held on the 12th.
The Saemal Meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternative terms that are easy for the general public to understand before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communication, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of alternative terms led by government ministries and media outlets.
