[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 24th its strong commitment to realizing carbon neutrality in the local community by participating in the ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality’ declaration.
According to the county, on this day, it participated non-face-to-face in the ‘Special Session on Carbon Neutrality Practice’ jointly hosted by the Ministry of Environment and the ‘Carbon Neutral Local Government Practice Alliance’ at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, declaring carbon neutrality by 2050 together with all 243 local governments in Korea.
This ‘Local Government Carbon Neutrality Special Session’ is highly significant as it was one of the pre-events of the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit, and it produced a declaration in which all local governments in Korea (243 locations) pledged to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050, spreading the climate action will of the Practice Alliance, which was launched in July 2020 (with 81 members).
The event was attended in a hybrid (in-person + online) format by key figures including Han Jeong-ae, Minister of Environment, Jeon Hae-cheol, Minister of the Interior and Safety, Ban Ki-moon, Chair of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), as well as domestic and international local governments.
County Governor Seo Chun-soo said, “I hope that this declaration participation will lay the cornerstone for carbon neutrality centered on the Hamyang-gun region, and I expect that the practice and efforts of all residents will come together to bring about a great change in protecting the Earth.”
