[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The People Power Party has expressed its welcome regarding the outcome of the South Korea-US summit. They highlighted vaccine cooperation and the termination of the South Korea-US missile guidelines as achievements.
Kim Ye-ryeong, spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated in an oral commentary on the 22nd, "We welcome the announcement by the two leaders of South Korea and the US," emphasizing, "In particular, we welcome the agreement to establish a comprehensive partnership on the vaccine issue, which was a key agenda item, and the vaccine support cooperation for 550,000 South Korean troops."
She added, "Since last week the People Power Party’s delegation visiting the US requested priority vaccine support for military personnel, this is even more meaningful and rewarding."
However, Spokesperson Kim said, "The plan to establish a ‘global vaccine production hub’ lacks concrete details, so concerns remain about whether it can alleviate the public’s anxiety over vaccine supply. Since this is directly related to the safety of the people more than any other issue, we urge our government to present a more specific plan as soon as possible to reassure the public."
Kim also stated, "The declaration of the ‘termination of the South Korea-US missile guidelines’ is regarded as another significant result of this summit. Our government should show its determination to use this as an opportunity to strengthen security on the Korean Peninsula and enhance deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear capabilities."
Regarding the agreement to respect the Singapore joint statement along with the Panmunjom Declaration, she noted, "As President Biden said, ‘We cannot give North Korea everything it wants.’ While acknowledging the need for dialogue with North Korea, we must remember that this does not mean agreeing to a one-sided submissive stance toward North Korea."
She also evaluated the significance of President Biden awarding the Medal of Honor to Korean War veterans and expressed gratitude to companies that have made large-scale investments amounting to 44 trillion won during their visit to the US, as well as to the people who endure hardships amid the COVID-19 and economic crises.
Spokesperson Kim said, "The People Power Party has consistently and strongly advocated for vaccine cooperation with the US out of concern over COVID-19, and we once again welcome the government’s achievement in linking this to the results of the recent US visit. We will strive to proactively respond to any crisis and effectively solve problems," adding, "Going forward, the People Power Party will not hesitate to engage in bipartisan cooperation with the government for the national interest in areas such as vaccines, the economy, and North Korea’s nuclear issue."
