Gangdong-gu 'Amsa Urban Regeneration Sangsangnaru Rae' Resumes Operation

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is resuming operations of Amsa Urban Regeneration Sangsangnaru來, a facility that had been closed due to COVID-19 restrictions on multi-use facilities.

Amsa Urban Regeneration Sangsangnaru來 (hereafter Sangsangnaru來) is a community facility created as part of the Amsa-dong urban regeneration project. It consists of multi-purpose cultural spaces, a caf? and exhibition area, a neighborhood care center, craft spaces, a shared kitchen, and small meeting rooms. Any resident can freely book these spaces through the Sangsangnaru來 website.

Sangsangnaru來 is jointly operated by the non-profit corporation ‘Amsa Urban Regeneration Social Cooperative,’ established by local residents who grew through the urban regeneration project, and Gangdong-gu. The Amsa Urban Regeneration Social Cooperative was selected last year as a Seoul City Urban Regeneration Company (CRC) and serves as a sustainable private enterprise that acts as a vital link between public and private sectors, as well as individuals and groups, revitalizing Amsa-dong.

With the reopening, various classes have been launched for residents, including singing lessons, Korean traditional dance, line dance, disco janggu (traditional drum), children’s cooking, watercolor painting, and writing. Since April, on the last Saturday of every month, the Sangsangnaru來 Flea Market, organized by the Amsa-dong Happiness Association (Amhaeng Eosa, meaning “People who gather for happiness in Amsa-dong”), a local resident festival planning group, has been held.

Additionally, on the first floor caf? of Sangsangnaru來, a 'Shop' displaying residents’ handmade crafts and a 'Gallery' exhibiting and selling works by local artists are operated. Various public interest activities and resident participation projects such as a shared library and “Our Neighborhood Paint Can” (paint sharing) are also being prepared. Participants are recruited continuously, and profits are returned to the local community.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “We hope that the operation of Amsa Urban Regeneration Sangsangnaru來 will help residents overcome COVID blues even a little. The district will also ensure thorough safety measures, including regular disinfection, mask-wearing, and temperature checks, so residents can use the facility safely.”

For reservations and participation applications at Sangsangnaru來, inquiries can be made through the Sangsangnaru來 website or by phone.
