[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Deoksung is showing strength. It appears that the news of Yoon Seok-yeol, a leading opposition presidential candidate and former Prosecutor General, recently visiting the Seoul National University Semiconductor Joint Research Center and discussing workforce shortages in the semiconductor industry with experts is influencing the stock price.
As of 9:24 a.m. on the 20th, Deoksung is trading at 27,900 KRW, up 6.49% from the previous trading day.
On the 17th, former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol visited the Seoul National University Semiconductor Joint Research Center to tour the semiconductor research and development site. After resigning as Prosecutor General, Yoon has been studying policy issues by meeting experts in labor, diplomacy and security, and economics. This time, he visited a semiconductor facility experiencing a global supply shortage to hear voices from the field.
During his visit to the research center, Yoon met with Jeong Deok-gyun, Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University, and Lee Jong-ho, the director of the research center, and toured the facility for about three hours. Established in 1988, the Seoul National University Semiconductor Joint Research Center is Korea’s representative semiconductor think tank, having produced more than 1,500 master's and doctoral graduates over more than 30 years who have been responsible for domestic semiconductor research and development.
In a phone interview with Maeil Business Newspaper, Professor Jeong said, "He contacted me first and said he wanted to study semiconductor-related topics," adding, "Since I am a professor and have academic materials prepared, we were able to meet and I could explain them."
Professor Jeong also said, "We discussed the problem of a severe shortage of semiconductor-related personnel," and added, "Former Prosecutor General Yoon asked me to let him know if there are any policies needed in the future."
Deoksung was classified as a 'Yoon Seok-yeol theme stock' because CEO Lee Bong-geun and outside director Kim Won-il are alumni of the same university as former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol.
A group of experts supporting former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, who has emerged as a leading presidential candidate, has also appeared. This is the 'National Coalition for the Restoration of Fairness and Common Sense' forum, composed of experts from various fields. As a clear expert group expressing support beyond a simple fan club has begun to form, attention is focused on whether Yoon’s political activities will accelerate.
