[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] The world's largest search engine company, Google, announced on the 18th (local time) that it will unify the smartwatch operating system (OS) with Samsung Electronics.

Google made this announcement at the 'Google I/O (Annual Developer Conference) 2021' held online at its headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Until now, Google has used a separate OS called 'Wear OS', and Samsung has used 'Tizen', but they have decided to unify them.

Samir Samat, Vice President of Product Management at Google, said that while updating Wear OS for smartwatches, they focused on three key areas, and the first was "to build a unified platform together with Samsung."

He explained that the focus was on longer battery life, faster performance, and making it easier for application developers to create better watch apps.

Additionally, Samat said that through collaboration, they created apps that start 30% faster, and with a small, low-power power core, the heart rate sensor can operate all day while still leaving enough battery for the next day.

He added, "This platform will be open not only to Google and Samsung but also to other device makers."

Patrick Chomet, Vice President and Head of Customer Experience (CX) at Samsung Electronics' Wireless Business Division, also appeared via video, saying, "Samsung and Google are working closely to optimize performance," adding, "This means better responsiveness and longer battery life."

Chomet also added that Google apps and services such as the Play Store and Google Maps will be available on the next Galaxy Watch.
