[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Lotte Mart announced on the 19th that it will hold an 'Onion Farmers Support' event jointly planned with the Jeollanam-do Provincial Government at all stores from the 20th to the 26th. During this event, 100 tons of fresh onions will be sold at prices 20% lower than the market price.
Fresh onions, which began shipping in 2021, have seen a continuous price decline due to increased cultivation area and favorable growth conditions. Additionally, with the prolonged consumption slump caused by COVID-19, prices are expected to continue falling. Lotte Mart prepared this event to promote the consumption of Muan fresh onions to help farmers struggling with the ongoing price drop and to offer customers onions at more affordable prices.
The Muan region is famous for its mineral-rich loess soil. Muan fresh onions, grown in sea breeze conditions, are characterized by a crisp texture and rich aroma. In particular, fresh onions have a texture and sweetness comparable to fruit, making them mild enough to eat raw and versatile for salads and various dishes.
A Lotte Mart official said, “We planned the fresh onion consumption promotion event together with the Jeollanam-do Provincial Government to help farmers facing difficulties due to COVID-19. We expect this to relieve the burden not only on farmers but also on customers who feel the pressure of rising grocery prices.”
