Even Toyota, which reported semiconductor stockpiles... Japanese factory shutdown

[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan is adjusting production at two of its factories in Japan due to the semiconductor supply shortage.

According to Kyodo News and others, Toyota announced on the 18th that it will suspend operations for 3 to 8 days next month on three production lines at two factories located in Iwate Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture due to difficulties in securing semiconductor parts.

The suspension period will be up to 8 days between the 7th and 22nd of next month at the Iwate factory, and 3 days from the 9th of next month at the Ohira factory in Miyagi Prefecture.

This is the first time Toyota has adjusted production at its Japanese factories since the semiconductor supply shortage intensified.

As a result of this production adjustment, a production loss of approximately 20,000 units is expected across three models: the compact car brand Yaris, and the sport utility vehicles (SUVs) C-HR and Yaris Cross.

Toyota has stated that, following the Great East Japan Earthquake, it has continued a strategy of expanding inventory and has not experienced difficulties in procuring parts such as semiconductors.

Japanese media analyzed that Toyota's announcement of production adjustments at domestic factories reflects the seriousness of the semiconductor shortage issue.

Earlier, among Japanese automakers, Subaru suspended operations for 8 days at its Gunma Prefecture factory and for 10 days at its U.S. factory last month due to a shortage of semiconductor parts.

Nissan Motor Corporation expects production disruptions of about 250,000 units throughout this year due to insufficient semiconductor parts supply. Mitsubishi Motors also anticipates a reduction of about 40,000 units this year for the same reason.
