They conducted preliminary preventive inspections to minimize casualties caused by safety facilities at emergency exits in multi-use facilities.
In fact, in March, three men fell from a balcony-type emergency exit on the third floor of a commercial building in Gyeonggi Province, resulting in one death.
Among 968 multi-use facilities in the province with balcony-type emergency exits, 97 locations were selected mainly focusing on aging targets and will be surveyed as a sample.
They plan to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the aging condition of balcony-type emergency exits, safety of railings and supports, welding and corrosion status, and check whether safety facilities such as fall risk alarm devices and safety ropes are installed.
Additionally, they will recommend the removal of balcony-type emergency exits when multi-use facilities close or suspend business to preemptively eliminate risk factors.
Facilities identified as having balconies ineffective for evacuation will be issued corrective orders, and if violations are found, fines will be imposed concurrently.
Chief Ma Jaeyoon said, “Since balcony emergency exits in multi-use facilities are used by an unspecified large number of people, safety management is very important,” adding, “We will strengthen publicity such as safety education and sending guidance documents to related parties, and do our best to manage emergency exit safety facilities through thorough inspections.”
