Kim Cheol-ju, Damyang Education Director, Visits 5·18 Democratic Movement Merit Recipients

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Damyang Office of Education announced on the 18th that it visited the 5·18 Democratic Movement merit recipients to express gratitude and respect on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of the 5·18 Democratic Movement.

This visit to the 5·18 Democratic Movement merit recipients was organized to honor the noble spirit of sacrifice of the democratic uprising that fought against the dictatorship regime for democracy in Gwangju in May 1980, and to inherit and develop the 5·18 democratic spirit that respects democracy, justice, and human rights.

Education Superintendent Kim Cheolju personally visited the family of Kang Jongwon (62), who devoted himself to democracy, to deliver thanks and consolation gifts.

He also visited the Damyang County 5·18 People's Uprising Commemoration Event Committee and held an event to deliver consolation gifts to the merit recipients in Damyang County.

A member of the Damyang County 5·18 Democratic Uprising Commemoration Event Committee said, “We are infinitely grateful that the superintendent personally visited our committee to encourage us and honor the noble spirit.”

In the future, together with the members of the Damyang County 5·18 People's Uprising Commemoration Event Committee, they plan to hold a joint memorial service at the National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery on the 27th following the 41st anniversary ceremony.

Education Superintendent Kim Cheolju stated, “The current situation in Myanmar, where people are fighting against the military dictatorship regime to achieve democracy, is similar to the situation in Gwangju 41 years ago. The 5·18 spirit has become a symbol of the democratization movement beyond time, generations, and borders. We will do our best to realize democratic citizenship education through the inheritance and practice of the spirit of the 5·18 Democratic Movement.”
