[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Abstract painter Lee Jeongji passed away on the 16th at the age of 80.
Born in 1941, Lee majored in Western painting at Hongik University College of Fine Arts and its graduate school. He was active in the Dansaekhwa group until the 1980s. In the 1990s, he sought change through experiments by incorporating calligraphic styles such as Anjinggyeong and Chusache into his works, creating diverse and sculptural variations.
Lee repeatedly applied and scraped off pigments to depict changes in time and space on the canvas. He established a unique artistic world by using a palette knife to scrape instead of brush strokes.
Even last October, he held a solo exhibition at Seon Gallery, passionately pursuing his artistic spirit despite his advanced age, but he suddenly passed away due to a heart attack.
