[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Choi Juseon, CEO (President) of Samsung Display, presented self-emissive displays as the core solution of the display industry that will lead digital transformation in the era of the 'Metaverse.'
At the 'Display Week 2021' hosted online by the Society for Information Display (SID), Choi delivered a keynote speech titled 'The Great Future of the Metaverse and Display,' stating, "The global display industry is facing a significant turning point called the 'Metaverse.'" The pre-recorded keynote speech by Choi will be released on the 18th in the afternoon, Korea Standard Time.
According to Samsung Display, in his keynote, Choi emphasized, "The big trend called the Metaverse is causing rapid changes in the display industry, and the 'new normal' society where remote work, online meetings, and education have become everyday life will accelerate these changes. Amid these massive changes, the importance of displays is growing day by day, and new trends and innovations are emerging within the display industry."
Choi predicted that as the boundaries of traditional IT devices such as smartphones, tablets, and monitors break down, new IT devices differentiated and customized according to individual usage environments and needs will emerge, and people will experience the 'digital transformation' era through various types of display form factors such as foldable, rollable, slidable, and full-screen. He also mentioned that consumers increasingly desire seamless, natural, high-definition viewing experiences anytime and anywhere, with a heightened demand for vivid image quality as if facing reality.
Furthermore, with the full-scale advent of the mobility revolution including autonomous electric vehicles, Choi anticipated that automotive displays will enter our lives with new form factors like foldable, and the demand for new technologies such as ultra-large wall-mounted displays, transparent display windows, and mirror displays will continue to increase.
Choi emphasized, "The most important technology platform indicated by these changes is the 'self-emissive display,' which possesses both excellent image quality and form factor." He added, "Samsung Display, which pioneered the self-emissive market and led technology by successfully mass-producing OLED for the first time in the world in 2007, will continue to lead the industry based on various technological solutions. Samsung Display will develop various self-emissive technologies such as OLED, QD, and LED. We will provide display solutions covering small to large sizes from 1 inch to 200 inches and lead market growth."
During the speech, Choi also demonstrated Samsung Display's next-generation 17-inch foldable and multi-foldable products. At this 'Display Week 2021,' keynote speakers include Choi Juseon, Miriam Daniel, Vice President of Amazon, Stefano Corazza, Vice President of Adobe, and Anna Corrales, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Google.
