2021 Gangbuk-gu Scholarship Recipients Selected...100,000 KRW for High School Students, 200,000 KRW for University Students Provided

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Kyum-soo) is recruiting candidates for the 2021 Gangbuk-gu Scholarship Students selection.

Every year, the district has selected students facing academic difficulties due to economic circumstances as scholarship recipients. Last year, tuition and fees were supported, but with the full implementation of free high school education this year, a scholarship grant for academic encouragement with a living support nature will be provided: 1 million KRW for high school students and 2 million KRW for university students.

The number of recipients is a total of 44, including 29 high school students and 15 university students. As of the announcement date (May 24, 2021), applicants must be residents who have continuously held a resident registration address in Gangbuk-gu for more than one year or children of such residents, and must not be receiving scholarships from national, local government, school, or private organizations this year.

The scholarships are divided into four categories: Welfare, Excellence, Merit, and Gangbuk Hope. In the 'Welfare' category, which supports students facing academic difficulties due to economic reasons, 13 high school students and 15 university students will be recruited. High school students who are financially challenged and whose entrance grades or grades from the previous semester rank within the top 20% of their enrolled grade can apply in the 'Excellence' category. Five scholarship students will be selected in the 'Excellence' category.

Additionally, in the 'Merit' category for children of residents or workers in Gangbuk-gu who have faithfully served the local community for more than one year and contributed to district development, and in the 'Gangbuk Hope' category for high school students specially recommended by their school principals for outstanding public service such as good deeds, filial piety activities, social service, or competition awards, 2 and 9 students will be selected respectively.

Applicants can check eligibility requirements through the announcement posted on the district office website after May 24 and apply by visiting their local community service center from June 1 to June 18.

The district will conduct a survey of applicants, verify scholarship overlap and academic status, and announce the selection results at the end of July. Scholarships will be paid twice, in August and October.

Mayor Park Kyum-soo of Gangbuk-gu said, “I hope that students facing difficulties due to the spread of COVID-19 and economic recession can nurture their dreams through scholarships,” and added, “We will do our best to support students so that they can focus on their studies without economic worries.”
