"Prevent Dementia with Music" Gimhae-si Dementia Relief Center Operates Cultural Arts Healing Program

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] On the 17th, the Dementia Safety Center in Gimhae-si, Gyeongnam, signed a business agreement with Yeoul, the Culture and Arts Music Therapy Institute, to provide a specialized cultural and artistic healing program for elderly people at risk of dementia.

The dementia prevention cultural and artistic healing program is designed as a musical play with a story, including activities such as counting beats and waiting, playing with more accurate pitch, and harmonizing together to activate the cognitive functions of the elderly. In addition to musical elements, external cognitive activities are also conducted.

Considering the COVID-19 situation, the program will be conducted along with non-face-to-face activities. It is scheduled to be operated from June at the Dementia Safety Center and Naewae Small Library.

The participants are approximately 15 elderly people aged 60 or older. A total of eight experts, including Hwang Seong-ha, a supervisor and adjunct professor of music therapy at Inje University, music therapists, and artists, will conduct the program together. Dementia screening tests, tests for senile depression and stress, and other dementia prevention activities will also be conducted concurrently.

Lee Jong-hak, director of the Gimhae City Health Center, said, “Through this program, we hope that the joy of learning new instruments and the positive energy of communicating with the community will lead to a healthy old age.”
