Samsung vs LG Display, Next-Generation OLED Competition at US SID Exhibition

Samsung D unveils new technologies including the 'S Foldable' that folds twice
LGD showcases full product lineup from TV and AR to automotive OLED

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Samsung Display and LG Display are unveiling next-generation OLED products at the world's largest display-focused exhibition, stepping up their technology competition.

Samsung and LG Display announced that they will participate in the Society for Information Display (SID) 2021 exhibition, held from the 17th to the 21st (local time), showcasing differentiated OLED products.

First, Samsung Display revealed new technologies such as the S-foldable, slidable, and UPC (Under Panel Camera). Samsung Display's S-foldable is a multi-foldable product that can be folded twice both inward and outward, while the slidable product maintains the traditional smartphone form factor but expands the screen horizontally to enjoy the benefits of a large display.

The UPC technology places the front camera, which was previously located on the bezel of IT devices, under the panel to minimize the bezel and maximize the screen, enabling full-screen technology. At this event, Samsung Display's President Choi Joo-sun will actively participate in various segments, including delivering a keynote speech titled "The Future of Display" and presenting thematic papers.

LG Display will showcase differentiated OLED technologies across its entire product lineup, from TV OLED panels to AR (Augmented Reality) OLED and automotive plastic OLED. LG Display unveiled an 83-inch next-generation OLED TV panel with over 20% improved luminous efficiency, demonstrating its superiority in large OLED technology. Additionally, the '0.42-inch OLEDoS for AR' revealed at the event offers the highest resolution and brightness among existing AR displays, providing an optimal display solution.

In the automotive plastic OLED sector, LG Display exhibited a super-large automotive display created by connecting four displays in a T-shape and a 12.8-inch rollable display, presenting a blueprint for targeting the promising automotive display market. Notably, the super-large automotive display, made by connecting four displays into one, not only delivers perfect black expression of OLED but also allows easy bending or curving, enabling natural curved designs.
