[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] Police Commissioner General Kim Chang-ryong expressed that there are "limitations" to the claim that pensions and salaries of police officers who arrested Yoon Seong-yeo (54), who was falsely accused as the real culprit of the 'Lee Chun-jae 8th case' and later acquitted in a retrial, should be reclaimed.

On the 17th, through written materials at a press briefing, Commissioner Kim stated, "Since the individuals in question have already retired or passed away a long time ago, there are legal and practical limitations to taking legal or administrative actions."

He added, "To make it clear that such an incident must never happen again, we unprecedentedly canceled their promotions," emphasizing, "We also left records to serve as historical reflection and lessons."

The National Police Agency held a review committee at the end of March and decided to cancel the promotions of all five police officers who arrested Yoon and were promoted as a result. Three were promoted from constable to corporal, and two from corporal to sergeant.

None of these officers remain active in the police force. Three have retired, and two have already passed away. Among the deceased officers was the individual who discovered the physical characteristics that served as decisive evidence for Yoon's arrest at the time. However, there has been controversy as pensions and salary recoveries for these individuals have not been carried out.

The police are also discussing whether to cancel promotions related to the 'Nakdong Riverside Murder Case,' in which a not guilty verdict was recently issued in a retrial. Commissioner Kim said, "We are reviewing and analyzing the facts and legal aspects of the Nakdong Riverside Murder Case," adding, "We will handle the matter according to procedures based on the results of legal consultations."
