[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] A petition to amend the Military Service Act to mandate military service for women has received the consent of 100,000 people and has been referred to the relevant committees, the National Defense Committee and the Women and Family Committee.
On the 14th, the National Assembly announced that the "Petition to Amend the Military Service Act Regarding Mandatory Military Service for Women" had received the required 100,000 consents. Accordingly, this petition has become subject to review by the relevant standing committee.
The petition, registered by Jo Mo on the 21st of last month, stated, "Military personnel are decreasing due to population decline," and "To prevent the reduction of military personnel, please amend the law to make women's military service mandatory rather than optional."
Regarding this legislative petition, he argued, "It seems difficult to fill the military headcount with only healthy men," and "Healthy women may be more suitable as combat soldiers in war than men who are ill."
