[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Global Area Studies Institute at Pukyong National University (Director Park Sang-hyun, Professor of International Area Studies) held the "3rd Pan-Pacific Colloquium" on the afternoon of the 13th at the 5th-floor Community Hall of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Building in a hybrid online and offline format.

Under the theme "Maritime City Culture and the Intersection of Multiple Civilizations," the event featured a special lecture and discussion by Professor Jang Se-hoon of Dong-A University (Department of Sociology).

In his lecture, Professor Jang presented a new socio-ecological approach for mid-range urban studies by combining an ecological approach with a political-sociological perspective, focusing on "Asia in Busan, the Transformation of Chinatown in Choryang-dong, Busan."

He introduced that "Shanghai Street," the Chinatown in the Busan area, has undergone four stages of transformation since the late 19th century: internal isolation type, external blockade type, decline type, and residential type Chinatown.

Park Sang-hyun, director of the Global Area Studies Institute, explained, "This colloquium is meaningful in revealing how multiple civilizations have mutually intersected and penetrated the maritime city of Busan."

He also stated, "We plan to continue holding academic events to explore development directions for Busan as a central city in the Pan-Pacific region."

The Global Area Studies Institute at Pukyong National University was selected last year for the Korea Research Foundation's Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Project (2020?2026) and is conducting research on "Peaceful Co-evolution of Multiple Civilizations in the Pan-Pacific as a Mega-Region."

This year, the institute plans to lead research on Pan-Pacific maritime cities by holding more than five colloquia annually, including the 1st on "Maritime Cities, Culture, and Multiple Civilizations," the 2nd on "Multi-scale Survey Methods in the Pan-Pacific Region," and this 3rd colloquium.
