Undercover Patrol Cars and Traffic Sidecars Deployed by Region
Delivery Motorcycle Traffic Violation Crackdown [Provided by Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency]
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency will intensively crack down on traffic violations by two-wheeled vehicles such as delivery motorcycles until August.
On the 13th, the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency announced, "We plan to deploy undercover patrol cars and other measures to conduct a 100-day operation (from May 14 to August 21) targeting motorcycle traffic violations."
The main targets of the crackdown are violations such as running red lights, crossing the center line, failing to protect pedestrians, and riding on sidewalks, which pose a very high risk of accidents and seriously threaten pedestrian safety.
The police plan to especially focus on cracking down on traffic violations by delivery motorcycles, which generate the most complaints, by deploying undercover patrol cars and traffic sidecars from the provincial police agency and police stations in each jurisdiction during the special safety activity period.
This special crackdown is a preemptive measure to prevent frequent traffic violations and pedestrian accidents caused by the rapidly increasing number of delivery motorcycles, as well as accidents due to seasonal factors when two-wheeled vehicle traffic increases.
According to the police, two-wheeled vehicle accidents increased by 8.2% compared to last year (as of May 10, 2021), and while the overall fatality rate of traffic accidents (the ratio of fatal accidents to total accidents) is 1.36%, the fatality rate for two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents is very high at 3.24%.
A representative of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency said, "The joint crackdown using highly covert undercover patrol cars and highly mobile traffic sidecars is expected to greatly contribute to reducing motorcycle fatal accidents," and urged two-wheeled vehicle riders and drivers to voluntarily comply with traffic regulations.
