70s Sentenced to Prison for Attempting to Throw Acid at Workplace After Being Rejected in Relationship

[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] A man in his 70s who attempted to pour hydrochloric acid at the victim's workplace after being rejected in a relationship proposal was sentenced to prison.

On the 13th, Judge Lee Jin-young of the Seoul Northern District Court Criminal Division 9 sentenced 75-year-old Pyeon Mo to three years in prison on charges including special injury.

Pyeon is accused of bringing two plastic bottles containing hydrochloric acid to a restaurant where a man in his 30s, Mr. A, works on December 12 last year and attempting to pour the acid on Mr. A, but was stopped by employees, resulting in an attempted crime.

Just before the crime, he threatened Mr. A by saying, "I will pour one bottle on your face and drink the other one myself." When Mr. A ran away, Pyeon caused a disturbance and swung the bottle containing hydrochloric acid, injuring employees' faces, arms, and legs with burns.

Investigations revealed that Pyeon had been demanding to meet Mr. A and sending threatening messages for several months before the crime, and even held a one-person protest in front of the restaurant.

The court acknowledged all charges as guilty, stating, "It appears that the victims must have felt considerable pain."
