[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] There are reports that the U.S. Department of Defense is planning to remove Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi (小米) from the so-called 'blacklist.'
According to major foreign media on the 12th, the U.S. government and Xiaomi have agreed to resolve the ongoing litigation and not to raise any further objections. Xiaomi is reportedly monitoring the situation closely without providing detailed explanations.
The U.S. Department of Defense removing Xiaomi from the 'blacklist' means that it will no longer be subject to sanctions. Following this news, Xiaomi's stock price surged more than 6% in the Hong Kong stock market.
This reverses the decision made during the previous Donald Trump administration. On January 14 of this year, six days before the end of President Trump's term, the U.S. Department of Defense added nine Chinese companies, including Xiaomi and the state-owned aircraft manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), to the blacklist, suspecting their use for military purposes.
The U.S. banned new investments in these companies and required existing investors to divest their shares by November 11. In response, Xiaomi filed a lawsuit in a U.S. court, arguing that the Department of Defense's measures were neither justified nor lawful.
In March, the U.S. court issued a preliminary injunction temporarily removing Xiaomi from the U.S. government's blacklist.
