Winia Dimchae Old Kimchi Refrigerator Fires Occur Repeatedly... Consumer Safety Alert

Cap Model Produced Before September 2005

Winia Dimchae Old Kimchi Refrigerator Fires Occur Repeatedly... Consumer Safety Alert Aging kimchi refrigerators from Winia Dimchae currently under recall.

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chunhan] The Korea Consumer Agency and the National Institute of Technology and Standards jointly issued a consumer safety advisory as fires continue to occur in aging Winia Dimchae kimchi refrigerators currently under recall.

According to the two organizations on the 12th, the recalled kimchi refrigerators are lid-type models produced before September 2005. Fires have continuously occurred due to internal component short circuits caused by product aging, leading the company to initiate a voluntary recall since December last year.

As of the end of March, out of 2.78 million units subject to recall, 1.26 million units (45.2%) have been recalled, while about 50 fire incidents suspected to be caused by the recalled products occurred over the four months since December last year.

These models were mostly distributed through direct sales or comprehensive electronics dealerships, and since more than 15 years have passed since their sale, it is difficult to accurately track their sales history.

The Consumer Agency and the National Institute of Technology and Standards urged consumers using these products to be sure to receive part replacements and compensation sales measures through the manufacturer's website or customer service center. They also stated that home appliances that use continuous power, like kimchi refrigerators, pose a fire risk when aged, recommending that products used for more than 10 years undergo regular safety inspections and that installation should avoid places with high humidity or dust.
