[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 12th that it plans to begin a detailed soil contamination investigation from the second half of this year ahead of the full-scale Ojeong Military Base urban development project.
Currently, the Ojeong military base site is cleaned up according to the 'Zone 3' standard applied to defense and military facility sites under the Soil Environment Conservation Act.
Accordingly, the city intends to upgrade the cleanup to the highest standard of soil contamination measures, 'Zone 1,' suitable for creating an eco-friendly residential complex after the base relocation, and then proceed with development.
The city is currently consulting with the Ministry of National Defense regarding the specific schedule related to soil contamination and plans to complete the detailed soil contamination investigation before the modernization (relocation) of the military base is finished.
Following the results, the city aims to complete soil contamination cleanup work before the completion of the Ojeong-dong military base area urban development project in 2025.
The Ojeong Military Base urban development project (around 440,000㎡ in Ojeong-dong 148 area) is expected to accelerate, holding resident briefings for zone designation and development plan establishment, targeting base relocation by 2023 and commencement of urban development construction in 2024.
