[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] GS Retail announced on the 12th that it will hold the "Miryang Direct Shipment Fair" at GS Supermarket (GS The Fresh) until the 18th to support the sale of local agricultural products.
In 2018, GS Retail signed a mutual cooperation agreement with Miryang City to expand the distribution of agricultural products from the region. Through this, GS Supermarket has held annual discount events for Miryang's local specialties such as Eoreumgol apples, perilla leaves, chili peppers, new potatoes, and shiitake mushrooms. Additionally, events to support farmers affected by natural disasters have been conducted, and merchandisers (MDs) visit the production sites more than three times a month to discuss product development, maintaining an active cooperative relationship.
This year's Miryang Direct Shipment Fair has prepared more than 70 tons of the local specialty "Seohong Gamja," which is double the amount compared to the previous year. Seohong Gamja is a premium potato from Miryang, harvested only temporarily in May each year. Its skin is red, but the inside is white. It is characterized by a fluffy texture and a mild taste. Events for new carrots and new cabbages from Miryang will also be held simultaneously.
Convenience store GS25 will introduce small-packaged Seohong Gamja after late May, and will additionally sell Miryang's specialty yellow-fleshed watermelon in June. The online grocery mall GS Fresh Mall will hold the Miryang Direct Shipment Fair in the same way as the supermarket event.
A GS Retail official said, "We actively support securing sales channels for local producers and promoting mutual exchange by selling regional specialties, with which we have signed cooperation agreements, through various online and offline channels such as GS25 and GS Supermarket," adding, "We will actively prepare various events so that high-quality local products can be offered to customers at affordable prices."
