Mayor Ahn Byeong-yong's Key Project for the Second Half: Attracting Gyeonggi Research Institute An Byeong-yong, Mayor of Uijeongbu

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] An Byeong-yong, the three-term mayor of Uijeongbu City, cited attracting the Gyeonggi Research Institute, returning Camp LaGuardia, installing regional complex sports facilities, and operating a COVID-19 vaccination center as key projects for the second half of this year.

Mayor An expressed trust in Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung's decision to create a fair Gyeonggi Province with the principle of "special compensation for special sacrifices" through local media the day before, stating, "Uijeongbu City hopes to attract the Gyeonggi Research Institute, a core institution among the provincial agencies planned for relocation to Uijeongbu."

Regarding the effect of attracting the Gyeonggi Research Institute, Mayor An expected it to "contribute to the symbolism of a lifelong learning city linked with three universities in the area as a symbolic policy platform of the city."

Concerning the Camp LaGuardia urban development project, he explained, "It is planned to be completed by 2026 as a city landmark, including the construction of a sports center and Uijeongbu 2-dong Community Center, the creation of cultural and sports parks, and the construction of apartment complexes."

He anticipated that upon completion of the project, it would greatly aid the city's finances, including plans for public interest returns such as a public office donation of 56 billion KRW from development profits, support for park creation costs of 46.3 billion KRW, and a plan to allocate 40% of the project profits to the city.

Mayor An also announced plans to build 'regional complex sports centers' where citizens can enjoy various sports activities.

The Songsan area center is scheduled to open in the second half of next year; the Nokyang Station area will have a cultural center and complex facilities within the urban development zone's cultural park; and the Howon area plans include a senior comprehensive welfare center and complex facilities on the site of the 600th Gimu Unit.

Additionally, Mayor An revealed plans to build the Bandabi Sports Center in Haerum Park, Nokyang-dong, guaranteeing priority use for people with disabilities; a sports center including the Eom Hong-gil Exhibition Hall and mountain experience center at the entrance of Wondobong Mountain; and a dedicated Baduk (Go) stadium within the 600th Gimu Unit site.

Regarding concerns about adverse reactions after COVID-19 vaccination, he urged, "Vaccine side effects are extremely rare," and emphasized, "It is essential to get vaccinated according to the government's vaccination plan."
