LOONA to Serve as Korea's Cultural Ambassador Abroad This Year

LOONA to Serve as Korea's Cultural Ambassador Abroad This Year The 12-member K-pop girl group 'Idarui Sonyeo (LOONA)' has been appointed as 'Korean Culture Overseas Promotion Ambassadors' and is holding an ambassador appointment ceremony with Hwang Hee, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, on the 10th.

[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The 12-member K-pop girl group 'Idarui Sonyeo (LOONA)' will serve as overseas ambassadors for Korean culture this year to promote Korea to the world.

On the 10th at 5 p.m., the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that it awarded a commission certificate to Idarui Sonyeo, who was selected as the '2021 Korean Culture Overseas Promotion Ambassador,' at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul.

As their first activity as ambassadors, Idarui Sonyeo is preparing a congratulatory performance for the '2021 Foreign Korean Promotion Experts Inauguration Ceremony' to be held on the 20th. They also participated in producing a promotional video for the 'International Content Contest' hosted by the Overseas Culture Promotion Agency. The related videos will be released on the official YouTube channel of the Overseas Culture Promotion Agency's Korea.net on the 20th and 25th.

The Overseas Culture Promotion Agency has been conducting contests with K-pop groups loved overseas since 2014. Since 2019, it has expanded its activities by appointing institutional overseas promotion ambassadors to take the lead in promoting Korea. Last year's ambassador, 'ATEEZ,' actively participated in the continuous campaign to overcome COVID-19 together and performed at Hallyu events. This year, Idarui Sonyeo will take over that role and promote Korean culture in a colorful way with their 12 members' unique charms.

Debuting in August 2018, Idarui Sonyeo made a significant impact on the music industry by releasing one member and a single album each month before their official debut and engaging in unit activities. Their album 'Midnight (12:00),' released last October, ranked number one on iTunes album charts in 51 countries including the United States and France. The track 'Star' from the album was the first by a domestic K-pop girl group to stay in the top 40 of the North American radio charts for nine consecutive weeks, receiving high praise from major overseas media.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hwang Hee said, "It is meaningful to appoint Idarui Sonyeo as Korean culture overseas promotion ambassadors this year, marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Overseas Culture Promotion Agency," and added, "I hope people around the world unite through Korean culture, enjoy it, and heal their minds and bodies exhausted by COVID-19 together."
