[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Management Technology Guidance Association (President Kim Oyeon) announced on the 10th that it held the ‘Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) ESG Management Support Proclamation Ceremony’ to promote sustainable growth of SMEs, realization of social value, and enhancement of corporate value.
The proclamation ceremony, held in the association’s main conference room, was attended by 11 people including President Kim Oyeon, Executive Vice President Kim Jingwan, and Seo Jeongtae, CEO of the Corporate Strategy Research Institute, and was conducted in strict compliance with COVID-19 quarantine guidelines.
ESG stands for Environment, Social, and Governance, emphasizing that companies must fulfill environmental protection and social responsibilities beyond mere net profit generation, including non-financial factors.
Recently, with the proposal of the SME and venture company support law for ESG management in Korea, it is expected that not only the private market but also government fund operation and management will incorporate social factors such as ESG, making ESG management an essential element for SMEs and venture companies.
Accordingly, the association plans to support education and consulting for SME ESG management through the SME ESG Management Support Group.
The declaration includes ▲creating an ESG management ecosystem through SME ESG consulting ▲supporting ESG management to improve SME performance and corporate value ▲training ESG management experts ▲and carrying out activities as experts with the mission to support SME ESG management.
An official from the association explained, "Since 2010, we have been training CSR consultants targeting management and technical guidance professionals, currently forming a pool of 500 sustainable management experts. The newly launched SME ESG Management Support Group consists of nine core members, including ESG management experts from large corporations and financial sectors, as well as ESG (or CSR) consultants active in government and public institutions."
Furthermore, the association plans to develop consulting methodologies that enable SMEs to respond to ESG evaluations from various assessment agencies, centered on the SME ESG Support Group. It also intends to train ESG experts among management and technical guidance professionals, including 500 CSR experts, and support SME ESG management through business agreements with related organizations and institutions, the association added.
Additionally, the association will actively carry out on-site support activities to raise ESG awareness among SMEs and facilitate the introduction and practice of ESG management by utilizing the ‘WIN-WIN 3000 Consulting Talent Donation Project,’ commemorating the enactment of the Management and Technical Guidance Act last April.
President Kim Oyeon of the association stated, “ESG management has become an essential management approach for the sustainable growth of SMEs and venture companies, not just an optional activity for social responsibility. The association, composed of 17,000 management and technical guidance professionals, will actively support SMEs and venture companies in adopting and practicing ESG management through the SME ESG Support Group.”
