The Gaya Tumuli consist of seven tumulus groups: Okjeon Tumuli in Hapcheon, Gyeongnam; Daeseongdong in Gimhae; Malsan in Haman; Gyodong and Songhyeon-dong in Changnyeong; Songhak-dong in Goseong; Yugok-ri and Durak-ri in Namwon, Jeonbuk; and Jisandong in Goryeong, Gyeongbuk. Ten local governments are joining forces to register them as a World Heritage site.

This event aims to promote and wish for the inscription of the Gaya Tumuli on the World Heritage List by forming a bicycle tour group of 44 people, including 40 cyclists recruited nationwide and 4 female cyclists from the Gyeongnam Sports Council. The tour will start from the Daeseongdong Tumuli in Gimhae and continue through Goseong, Haman, and Changnyeong to the Okjeon Tumuli in Hapcheon, covering approximately 173 km over 1 night and 2 days (April 14-15).

At the departure ceremony, the Cultural Heritage Administration, the National Museum of Korea, and the seven basic local government heads from Gyeongnam, Jeonbuk, and Gyeongbuk, who are jointly promoting the World Heritage registration, participated with cheering videos, uniting for Yeongnam and Honam harmony and the wish for inscription.

Cheering videos collected nationwide in April and inscription wish messages from famous local figures can also be seen.

The departure ceremony will be held online depending on the COVID-19 situation and will be broadcast live for 40 minutes from 11 a.m. on the 14th through Gyeongnam Province’s official YouTube channel ‘Gaengnam Official’.

During the Gaya-ro Bicycle Tour, a YouTube channel (Gaya-ro Bicycle Tour) will be opened, and various non-face-to-face cultural events and experience programs will be prepared for local residents’ participation.

For application and participation methods, please refer to the Hapcheon-gun website and Hapcheon Museum website for inquiries.

A county official stated, “We will closely cooperate with the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Gaya Tumuli World Heritage Registration Promotion Group, and the relevant metropolitan and local governments to ensure that there are no setbacks in the on-site inspection and registration preparation for the inscription of the Gaya Tumuli, including the Okjeon Tumuli.”
