Gangdong-gu Opens 'Smart Campus' for Students Nationwide

On the 14th, the Best Lecture Nationwide with Students Begins 'Smart Campus'...Interactive Remote Classes with 6 Cities, 25 High Schools, and Over 6,000 Students

Gangdong-gu Opens 'Smart Campus' for Students Nationwide

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) will utilize its educational resources to provide high-quality major and career content to students nationwide, and to bridge the educational gap between regions caused by COVID-19 by launching the "Gangdong Smart Campus" on the 14th.

Last year, as remote classes were fully implemented in metropolitan area schools due to COVID-19, Gangdong-gu became the first local government in the country to establish e-studios in all high schools, opening a real-time remote class platform to support smooth online classes.

Building on this, the district operates the Gangdong Smart Campus using a connected smart education platform between schools, allowing not only high school students within the district but also students from five regional cities to receive major and career education.

The Smart Campus, running from May to December, involves a total of six cities: ▲Gangdong-gu, Seoul ▲Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do ▲Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do ▲Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do ▲Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do ▲Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, with 25 high schools and approximately 6,000 students participating.

From the lecture on entering the future society by Kim Tae-won, Executive Director of Google Korea, on the 14th, to the future education lecture by Paul Kim, Associate Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education, on December 16th, a total of 10 lectures about majors and careers will be delivered by prominent university professors and education experts.

The instructors will teach at the e-studios established in high schools within Gangdong-gu, delivering lectures on majors and careers, while students in regional cities can attend and participate in the lectures held in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, online from anywhere with internet access.

On average, about 600 students participate in each lecture in real time online, and after the approximately one-hour lecture, a Q&A session between instructors and students is provided.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “The Smart Campus is a future-oriented education model unique to Gangdong-gu, designed to break down barriers between schools and further reduce educational disparities between regions.” He added, “We will continue to implement various support measures to provide new learning experiences beyond the constraints of time and space so that all students can enjoy the happiness of education in the rapidly changing educational environment.”
