Yeongdeungpo-gu Completes Hard Court Tennis Courts at Anyangcheon Retention Basin

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) completed the construction of seven hardcourt tennis courts at the end of April, utilizing idle land along the Anyangcheon Stream, marking the first time in the district's history to establish hardcourt tennis courts.

The only existing public tennis courts in Yeongdeungpo were three clay courts located within Daerim Sports Complex. To meet the increasing demand for recreational sports, the district invested a total of 1.3 billion KRW, with 650 million KRW each from city and district funds, to build seven hardcourt tennis courts on the idle land along Anyangcheon Stream.

Considering the flooding incidents around the Han River and Anyangcheon Stream caused by last year's heavy rains, the district prioritized river safety in the facility's design. A movable net fence that can be raised to the top during river flooding was installed, and durable, easy-to-maintain urethane and acrylic materials were selected for the court surface.

The Anyangcheon hardcourt tennis courts are highly regarded as a realization of long-standing wishes of tennis enthusiasts, reflecting active incorporation of local residents' opinions through multiple communications from design to construction.

The court dimensions comply with international tennis standards, measuring 23.77 meters in length and 10.97 meters in width. Special emphasis was placed on creating a spacious sports environment by providing wider spaces between courts compared to other facilities.

A 4.66-meter space between courts and a 6.52-meter space behind the baseline were created to ensure safe and comfortable tennis play.

Additionally, five lighting towers and LED lights were installed to enable sports activities for office workers after work hours.

The district has entrusted the systematic operation and management of the tennis courts to the Yeongdeungpo-gu Facilities Management Corporation. After a temporary operation period in May, the courts are scheduled to officially open in June, and reservations can be made through the Yeongdeungpo-gu Facilities Management Corporation website.

Meanwhile, with the completion of the Anyangcheon hardcourt tennis courts, the Anyangcheon Comprehensive Sports Belt project is entering its final phase. The creation of 130 parking spaces for user convenience in the idle areas around the tennis courts is expected to be completed in May, and the construction of an artificial turf soccer field and athletics track at the Galdae 3 Stadium is scheduled for completion in June this year.

Furthermore, bicycle path maintenance for traffic environment improvement and accident prevention, along with the creation of rest facilities such as parks, will be completed within the year.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “We are striving to expand sports facilities to improve residents' health and relieve the increased social fatigue caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. We will operate outdoor sports facilities based on strict compliance with quarantine guidelines so that people can safely enjoy sports activities as soon as COVID-19 ends.”
