Seoul Gangseo-gu Launches Container Making Challenge to Reduce Disposable Cups

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Efforts to reduce the use of disposable products are blossoming at the fingertips of volunteers.

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is launching the "Courage for the Earth" challenge with volunteers to reduce the use of disposable cups.

This challenge is a campaign where volunteers deliver tumbler bags knitted by hand to residents, spreading practical actions for environmental protection.

The word "Courage" carries two meanings: encouraging the use of reusable "containers" and having the "courage" to protect the environment.

Volunteers participate in making tumblers by watching videos pre-produced by a professional knitting volunteer group.

After receiving materials and patterns from the Volunteer Center, each participant makes a tumbler bag at home and submits the finished product. For those who find it difficult to make the bags through video instruction, small group face-to-face classes are held once a week at the Volunteer Center.

The tumbler bags will have handles for portability and will be designed with colorful yarns and the unique patterns of knitting.

The district will recruit 100 volunteers on a first-come, first-served basis starting from the 10th to participate in the production.

Residents interested in knitting or volunteering can apply through the 1365 Volunteer Portal.

The completed bags will be distributed to 300 residents who actively participate in the "Jupging Campaign" picking up trash in neighborhoods in July, outstanding volunteers, and excellent students from various schools involved in "Visiting Volunteer Education," all of whom work hard to protect the environment.

A district official said, "This challenge was planned to spread the habit of using reusable products in daily life when visiting cafes or going out. It is a great opportunity to practice sharing through volunteering and protect the environment, so we hope many residents will show interest and participate."
