[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Kim Yongmin, Supreme Council Member of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed his gratitude to broadcaster Kim Eo-jun for “making me the Chief Supreme Council Member” in relation to his election with the highest vote share in the recent Supreme Council Member election at the party convention.

Previously, Kim was elected as a Supreme Council Member with the highest vote share of 17.73% at the May 2 party convention.

Appearing on Kim Eo-jun’s YouTube show “Das Bweida” released on the 7th, Kim said, “Throughout the election period, I only talked about reform,” and added, “Conservative media persistently attacked that party sentiment and public sentiment were separated, but that was not the case.”

He continued, “I ranked first in votes from party members, but I also won first place by a large margin in general public opinion polls.” In response, Kim Eo-jun analyzed, “Right after the by-election, when people were blindly reflecting, Representative Kim argued that prosecutorial reform must be completed and media reform is urgent, which resonated with party members.”

Furthermore, Kim Yongmin agreed with Kim Eo-jun’s remark that “if the timing for prosecutorial reform is missed, no one knows when the next opportunity will come,” emphasizing, “We must finish before the momentum disappears, and if we miss it now, it won’t happen in this administration nor in the next.”

Regarding the voices of reform and self-reflection within the party following the April 7 by-election defeat, Kim criticized, “They keep saying ‘we reflect,’ but I don’t even know exactly what they are reflecting on, and it’s uncomfortable to hear,” adding, “Those who actually supported us don’t want to hear that.”

Kim also commented on the nominee for Prosecutor General, Kim Oh-soo, saying, “Within the party, there may be strong voices suggesting that since a Prosecutor General who can engage in dialogue has come in, prosecutorial reform can proceed a bit more slowly,” but he stressed, “However, prosecutorial reform must be pushed forward quickly and the laws must be passed.”
