Jongno-gu Hosts Cultural Experience Programs Including 'Bukhansan Jinheungwang Sunsubi Monument Hiking' Geumseonsa Sinjungdo

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) will conduct various cultural experience programs as part of the 2021 Traditional Mountain Temple Cultural Heritage Utilization Project until October in the area around Geumseonsa Temple (Bibong-gil 137) located in Gugi-dong.

This project, announced by the Cultural Heritage Administration, aims to reexamine the value and meaning contained in the cultural heritage held by traditional mountain temples and to create new cultural content through this.

Accordingly, the district planned a cultural experience program utilizing the ‘Geumseonsa Sinjungdo,’ Seoul City Tangible Cultural Property No. 161, last year and was selected for the public project.

Jongno-gu’s cultural experience program titled ‘Traditional Mountain Temple Cultural Heritage, Presenting a New Daily Life’ will recruit participants this month, officially start in June, and continue until October.

First, for family tourists, a ‘Making Guardian Deity-shaped Grip Tok’ experience program will be operated. This play program is designed to help people feel the guardian deity who protects the Buddhist law as a familiar companion in daily life.

Additionally, there will be a walking program that evenly tours the section from Geumseonsa Temple to the Jinheungwang Stele of Bukhansan Mountain, allowing participants to reflect on the value of our traditional cultural heritage. It is composed as a meaningful time to listen to professional explanations from cultural heritage guides and to explore the traditional mountain temple, raising expectations.

To comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, this program requires mandatory mask-wearing, entry log registration, and temperature checks.

In the Daeungjeon Hall of Geumseonsa Temple, the ‘Geumseonsa Sinjungdo,’ a guardian deity painting created in the 24th year of King Gojong’s reign and designated as Seoul City Tangible Cultural Property No. 161, is enshrined. Passing through Banyajeon where Buddhist ceremonies are held, visitors can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Inwangsan Mountain at the entrance of Mokjeonggul Cave.

Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “We aim to operate experience programs that anyone in the district can enjoy by utilizing the rich historical and cultural resources in the area, and to further promote the charm of the cultural heritage held by traditional temples,” adding, “We hope many interested people will apply.”
