[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A restaurant owner in Busan who habitually dumped food waste illegally while riding a motorcycle has been caught.

On the 6th, Geumjeong-gu, Busan announced that it imposed a fine of 500,000 KRW on delivery-specialized restaurant owner Mr. A for habitual illegal dumping of food waste. Mr. A is known to have repeatedly dumped food waste illegally while riding a motorcycle and frequently changing locations within the area.

The district's enforcement team began full-scale crackdowns after road cleaning workers requested action due to continuous food waste dumping for over a year in secluded areas or near parked vehicles. The enforcement team confirmed that the contents of the discarded waste were always similar and judged it to be the act of the same restaurant. After closely reviewing CCTV footage, they captured the scene of food waste being dumped from a motorcycle.

However, due to poor video quality, they could not identify the motorcycle's license plate. The enforcement team then investigated restaurants with motorcycles similar to the one in the footage and conducted a nighttime stakeout, catching Mr. A in the act. Mr. A admitted to dumping food waste and reportedly said, "Running the store has been difficult due to COVID-19."

Meanwhile, Geumjeong-gu's illegal dumping crackdown records were 443 cases in 2019 and 283 cases last year, ranking among the top in Busan's 16 districts and counties. The enforcement team stated, "We hope this incident being reported in the media will raise awareness about illegal waste dumping."
