[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] KT Group and Shinsegae Group are joining forces to enhance media and content competitiveness.
KT Studio Genie, which oversees KT Group's content business, announced on the 9th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mindmark, Shinsegae Group's media content business corporation, to strengthen original content production capabilities.
Through this MOU, the two companies will establish a foundation for strategic collaboration and strengthen their partnership in content planning and production, as well as domestic and international distribution and investment projects. It is expected to create synergy across various business areas in the media content field, including the drama production company Studio329 under Mindmark and Silkwood's production capabilities.
Prior to this MOU, KT Studio Genie and Mindmark collaborated on the joint planning and production of the drama "Crime Puzzle," based on the thriller webtoon of the same name. Building on this MOU, they will sign a joint content investment cooperation agreement and specify the number of content productions, mutual dedicated tasks, and scope of cooperation.
The first collaborative project between KT Studio Genie and Mindmark, Crime Puzzle, depicts the story of a criminal psychologist imprisoned for allegedly murdering a prominent politician and a profiler who lost his father because of him, as they interview each other about a murder case that occurred in prison. It is a crime psychological drama where two former lovers meet in a tragic relationship as a murderer (Yoon Kye-sang) and a profiler (Go Ah-sung). The production is handled by Studio329, led by CEO Yoon Shin-ae, and is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year. Studio329 is a drama production company that produced the Netflix original series "Extracurricular" last year.
Kim Cheol-yeon, CEO of KT Studio Genie, said, "Crime Puzzle is highly anticipated just by the meeting of Yoon Kye-sang, who boasts a wide acting spectrum through numerous works, and Go Ah-sung, whose acting skills and box office power have both been proven," adding, "It will be an attractive drama that is a psychological thriller of a different dimension from the usual simple detective stories, containing a poignant yet lonely underlying emotion."
Yoon Yong-pil, CEO of KT Studio Genie, stated, "In the increasingly fierce global content market and production environment, the cooperation between KT Studio Genie and Mindmark will be a starting point for bolder investments in quality content," and added, "Since both companies agree on the importance of cooperation to strengthen content capabilities at the group level, we will actively present competitive content starting in the second half of the year based on this."
Meanwhile, KT Studio Genie presented a blueprint to create a new 'With KT' content ecosystem through partnerships with domestic and international production companies and platform operators at a press conference in March. Going forward, it plans to strengthen its content business capabilities to a global level based on solid partnerships with domestic and international operators.
