Samhwa Paint Obtains Patent for 'Eco-Friendly Medium-Thickness Coating'

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jonghwa] Samhwa Paint Industrial Co., Ltd. announced on the 7th that it has obtained and disclosed a domestic patent for an "eco-friendly intermediate coating composition for steel structures capable of painting under humid environmental conditions and an eco-friendly intermediate coating film using the same."

"Intermediate coating" refers to a painting method used over a long period to prevent corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, ships, and containers exposed to harsh external environments. This widely used method employs a rust-preventive "primer" coating, an epoxy-based "intermediate" coating, and a urethane-based "topcoat."

Primer, intermediate, and topcoat refer to the sequence of painting operations. The primer is applied to the substrate before the overall painting process to enhance adhesion and durability between the coating and the substrate. The intermediate coating is the main coating that provides the actual paint performance, and the topcoat is applied over the intermediate coating to protect it from damage.

Intermediate coatings have generally used oil-based paints, but with recent tightening of environmental regulations, global market demand is gradually shifting toward water-based coatings. However, water-based intermediate coatings have had limitations such as reduced mechanical properties including corrosion resistance and weather resistance under restricted film thickness conditions.

In response, Samhwa Paint has developed an eco-friendly water-based intermediate coating composition that maintains excellent corrosion resistance and water resistance for extended periods even in humid environments.

A representative from Samhwa Paint stated, "This patent has been commercialized under the Super Water series (product names Super Waterpoxy 100, Super Waterpoxy 200, Super Watertan 300). As demand for environmentally friendly products increases, we aim to lead the eco-friendly paint market through this invention."
