Controversy Over 'Yeohyeom·Namhyeom' in Isuyok Assault Case, Both Men and Women Fined

[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] The fines for the parties involved in the so-called 'Isu Station Assault Incident,' where a group of men and women clashed near Isu Station in Seoul in 2018, have been finalized.

On the 7th, the Supreme Court's 3rd Division (Presiding Justice Kim Jae-hyung) upheld the original rulings sentencing woman A and man B, who were indicted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (joint assault), to fines of 2 million won and 1 million won respectively.

A and B were prosecuted for allegedly hitting each other at a bar near Isu Station in Sadang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, on November 13, 2018. According to police investigations, A's group made derogatory remarks toward a couple at a nearby table, and B's group, seated at another table, made remarks defending the couple.

During this process, one member of A's group slapped the hand of a member of B's group, after which another man struck the hat worn by the woman, sparking a scuffle. Eventually, they started a physical fight on the stairs, and one woman in A's group suffered a scalp laceration. The women's side claimed that the man kicked her, causing her to fall down the stairs, but the men's side argued that she was pushed and fell while trying to break free, asserting mutual assault.

The court initially issued summary fines of 2 million won to A and 1 million won to B, but both appealed and requested a formal trial. The first trial court sentenced A to 2 million won and B to 1 million won, recognizing most of their charges but acquitting A of injury charges.

The second trial court also sentenced A and B to fines of 2 million won and 1 million won respectively. On this day, the Supreme Court dismissed the defendants' appeals, confirming the original verdict recognizing their guilt on the charges.
