[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in visited Ulsan, which is promoting 'floating offshore wind power' as a new growth engine, inspected the site, and urged the realization of carbon neutrality by 2050 and the creation of quality jobs.

On the afternoon of the 6th, President Moon made these remarks during his greeting at the 'Ulsan Floating Offshore Wind Power Strategy Report' event held in Ulsan City. This visit marks the 13th field trip of the 'Visiting the Korean New Deal Sites' initiative started last year, and the 4th as part of the 'Regional Balanced New Deal Tour.'

Floating offshore wind power is a method of wind power generation where turbines are installed on floating bodies rather than being fixed to the seabed, allowing installation in seas deeper than 50 to 60 meters. Ulsan has favorable conditions for promoting offshore wind power, such as ▲natural conditions with an average wind speed of 8 m/s ▲large-scale power consumption sites, and is the first in Korea to promote floating offshore wind power.

Ulsan City plans to invest approximately 36 trillion won by 2030 to create a large-scale power generation complex of 6 gigawatts (GW) and produce green hydrogen using 20% of the generated power. If the project proceeds as planned, it is expected to produce enough electricity to supply about 5.76 million households, reduce 9.3 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, produce 84,000 tons of green hydrogen, and create 210,000 jobs.

At the strategy report event, President Moon listened to the presentations given by Song Cheol-ho, Mayor of Ulsan, and Han Young-seok, CEO of Hyundai Heavy Industries, on the 'Ulsan Floating Offshore Wind Power Green Hydrogen Promotion Strategy' and the 'Plan for Establishing Green Hydrogen Production Facilities Linked to Floating Offshore Wind Power,' respectively.

In his greeting, he emphasized that Korea can become a powerhouse in offshore wind power in the era of carbon neutrality, and wished for the success of Ulsan's floating offshore wind power to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and economic revitalization.

Afterward, President Moon moved to the nearby Hydrogen Demonstration Center to hear about the progress of the hydrogen industry and inspect the facilities. At this occasion, President Moon encouraged the officials, urging them to create large-scale quality jobs through floating offshore wind power and green hydrogen production and to play a significant role in realizing carbon neutrality by 2050.
