Damyang-gun Launches Full-Scale Preparations for Preliminary Cultural City with Up to 10 Billion Won in National Funding Support

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Damyang-gun has officially begun preparations for designation as a preliminary cultural city, and if designated as a legal cultural city, up to 10 billion KRW in national funding will be provided over five years.

According to the county on the 6th, a cultural city is a project promoted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism since 2018 to enable cities to plan and realize their cultural environment by utilizing unique cultural assets of each region.

Damyang-gun plans to establish a cultural city creation plan centered on the Cultural City Promotion Team and apply for the preliminary cultural city designation contest to be held in June.

They will form an administrative and intermediary support organization council to discover practical collaborative linkage projects and newly proclaim the cultural city vision through field-oriented opinion gathering and meetings for a resident-led cultural city.

As major projects for promoting the cultural city in 2021, Damyang-gun planned and designed a resident-led cultural city by recording Damyang’s culture and values through ▲‘Wheel-Driven Cultural City, Damyang’ ▲Roundtable ‘Cultural City 人 Jakdangso’ ▲Youth Leader ‘Damyang Gaksaek’ and others.

Im Seon-i, head of the Cultural City Promotion Team, said, “Damyang is a place where unique resources exclusive to Damyang have accumulated and manifested, and it has embraced diverse thoughts from various groups such as residents, artists, amateur artists, cultural activists, and village activists. We will do our best to become a city where the accumulated power of residents becomes culture.”

Meanwhile, Damyang-gun formed the Cultural City Promotion Team last April to promote the creation of a cultural city and its projects, and operates the ‘Humanities House,’ which has become a communication space for local residents in the old government office, as a cultural city hub.
