[Asia Economy Reporter Sumi Hwang] A teenage girl from the United States who accidentally ended up living in an apartment complex exclusively for elderly residents has gained attention by sharing her story on the video platform TikTok.
According to the NYT and others on the 3rd (local time), Madison Kohout (19) recently moved from Oklahoma to Arkansas. About a week after moving, she noticed a sign that read "Senior Living Community" while looking around. Soon, she realized that she had mistakenly moved into an apartment complex where only retired elderly people live.
Kohout said, "I couldn't believe it when I saw the sign," and "Only then did I understand why all my neighbors were decades older than me," foreign media reported.
According to Kohout, she had searched for a home online at the time, but detailed information about the apartment was not available. However, since there was also little information about other apartments located in Arkansas, she immediately proceeded with the lease contract for the apartment.
Kohout said, "This complex is designed for the elderly, but legally it is also an 'Equal Opportunity Housing' where age discrimination is not allowed."
She enjoyed socializing with her neighbors, listening to their stories, and eating delicious food. She also expressed joy, saying, "This is the first time in my life that I have eaten so much home-cooked food."
Kohout, who works as a nursing assistant, showed a positive attitude, saying, "My neighbors have hearing difficulties, so even if I come home late after work, I can listen to loud music at home."
After moving to Arkansas, Kohout's TikTok followers increased from about 30,000 to more than 92,000. Her experience living in the senior living community attracted attention when she shared it on TikTok.
Kohout said, "I enjoy bonding with my neighbors and listening to their stories," and she plans to continue living in the apartment and sharing her experiences on TikTok in the future.
