[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] On the afternoon of the 3rd (local time) in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, an elevated railway collapsed, causing a subway train passing over the viaduct to fall. More than 80 casualties were reported.
On the same day, AFP cited city officials reporting that at least 15 people died and 70 were injured in the elevated railway accident. Local media Mexico Times also reported that the number of injured exceeded 100.
Rescue operations and patient treatment are currently underway, so the death toll may increase.
Claudia Sheinbaum, mayor of Mexico City, stated on her Twitter account, "Unfortunately, there have been casualties," and added, "We are currently supporting the installation of a command post for rescue activities at the site."
According to the Mexico National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC), the accident occurred near Olivos Station on Metro Line 12 in Mexico City. Local media such as La Jornada reported that the accident happened around 10:30 p.m.
Metro Line 12, where the accident occurred, was constructed during the tenure of Marcelo Ebrard as mayor of Mexico City. Minister Ebrard tweeted, "What happened today is truly tragic," and added, "We will do our utmost to support the accident response."
Meanwhile, the Mexico City subway is used by more than 4 million people daily and is the second largest subway system in the Americas after New York City’s, according to The New York Times (NYT).
