[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The Ministry of National Defense announced on the 4th that it will pay a reward of 10 million won per person to 132 bereaved families of the 6.25 war casualties by 2022.
These are families of war casualties whose identities were confirmed before April 2, 2019, when the reward system for bereaved families of 6.25 war casualties was implemented. The Ministry of National Defense explained that this measure was taken following the establishment of grounds for retroactive payment in December last year.
The Ministry of National Defense's Remains Recovery and Identification Team (hereinafter referred to as the KND Team) held a reward payment ceremony by inviting nine bereaved families on the same day. For bereaved families who could not attend the event, the reward will be paid to their personal accounts along with a letter from the Minister of National Defense, a reward certificate, and consolation gifts.
This year, the reward will be paid to about 80 of the 132 people, and payment to the remaining bereaved families is expected to be completed by next year.
A military official emphasized the urgent need for "reports on the whereabouts of 6.25 war casualties' remains" and "collection of genetic samples from bereaved families" for identification of excavated remains, urging nationwide interest and participation.
