Impact of Factory Shutdown Due to Semiconductor Supply Shortages and Refusal of Delivery by Partners
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] SsangYong Motor announced on the 3rd that it sold a total of 4,381 units in April, including 3,318 units domestically and 1,063 units for export.
SsangYong Motor explained that sales decreased by 35.7% compared to April last year due to a 12-day factory shutdown caused by semiconductor parts supply disruptions and parts suppliers refusing deliveries amid corporate rehabilitation procedures.
SsangYong Motor had planned to halt operations from the 8th to the 16th of last month due to semiconductor supply issues, but after the court initiated rehabilitation procedures on the 15th, suppliers refused to deliver parts, leading to an extended shutdown.
The trade creditor group, consisting of about 350 SsangYong Motor suppliers, resolved to resume deliveries, and production restarted on the 26th of last month, with full efforts being made to clear the backlog.
With the strong performance of the newly launched The New Rexton Sports & Khan in early April and the recovery in exports, SsangYong Motor initially planned to sell around 9,200 units in April (6,000 domestic, 3,200 export).
In particular, The New Rexton Sports & Khan, which recorded about 1,300 contracts on its first day of release, accumulated approximately 5,000 contracts in the domestic market in April.
However, due to the production halt, only about 47% of the sales target was achieved, with domestic sales decreasing by 44.9% compared to the same month last year, while exports increased by 33.5% year-on-year due to the base effect, showing signs of recovery.
A SsangYong Motor official said, "The newly launched The New Rexton Sports & Khan is receiving greater-than-expected positive responses in the market, and exports are also recovering. We will resolve the backlog and expand sales through normal line operations by maintaining continuous cooperation with parts suppliers."
