[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook, who served as the inaugural chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, is publishing an autobiography reflecting on her illegal political funds scandal. Former Prime Minister Han was sentenced to two years in prison by the Supreme Court for illegal political fund charges and was released in August 2017 after serving her full term.
The publication is expected to be around the end of this month, coinciding with the 12th anniversary of the late President Roh Moo-hyun's passing (May 23).
Recently, the publisher 'Saenggak Saenggak' has been running a crowdfunding project on the platform 'Tumblbug' to publish Former Prime Minister Han's autobiography titled Han Myeong-sook's Truth: I Did Not Live That Way. Starting with a goal of 10 million KRW, the project had raised 27.56 million KRW from 900 supporters as of 7:50 PM on the 2nd.
According to 'Tumblbug,' Former Prime Minister Han wrote in the book's foreword, "Falsehood cannot overcome the truth. No matter how deep the darkness presses down, when dawn breaks, a new sky opens and another day begins."
She continued, "I have lived trapped in darkness for nearly ten years. I fought against fabricated trials created by the prosecution for six years. Ultimately, I was crushed by the ruthless attacks of an unjust regime, the prosecution, and the media, and had to spend two years in prison. The two years after my release, when I could do nothing, were a harsh ordeal too severe to simply dismiss as an unavoidable fate," she wrote.
She also added, "The only hope that kept me going through those bleak times was a firm belief in the truth. I am innocent. And that is the truth."
The autobiography's recommendation was written by former Democratic Party leader Lee Hae-chan. He stated, "On the day the trial began, Former Prime Minister Han shouted, 'I did not live that way.' This book contains the truth about how those who thrived under military dictatorship oppressed and falsely accused those who 'did not live that way.'"
He added, "In this book, you will confront truths that were unknown but should have been obvious, and discover Han Myeong-sook, a person who was warm to everyone and stronger than anyone else."
The book is organized into the following chapters: ▲Chapter 1 Opening the Door to Truth ▲Chapter 2 Period of Hardship ▲Chapter 3 Life of the Imprisoned ▲Chapter 4 My Life Journey ▲Chapter 5 Yoo Si-min Asks, Han Myeong-sook Answers.
The publisher introduced the book by saying, "We have waited for the truth. But it is not over. Han Myeong-sook is now restarting the work she had postponed. She personally wrote her truth," adding, "Her truth, pressed down with sorrow and injustice for ten years, is finally coming out into the world in a small book with your help."
Previously, Former Prime Minister Han was indicted on charges of receiving 900 million KRW in illegal political funds from Han Man-ho, former CEO of Hanshin Geonyeong, and was sentenced to two years in prison by the Supreme Court in 2015. She was released after completing her sentence in August 2017.
Meanwhile, former Dongyang University professor Jin Joong-kwon shared the news of Former Prime Minister Han's autobiography publication on Facebook, harshly criticizing it as "shameless."
