[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] A voice phishing scammer who impersonated a bank employee and deceived victims by claiming "low-interest loans are available" was caught by the police thanks to a taxi driver's report.
According to Ilsan Western Police Station on the 30th, the voice phishing scammer Mr. A received 23 million won from victim Mr. B in Incheon around 3:30 PM on the 27th, and tried to transfer the money to an accomplice (the ringleader) by taking a taxi to C Bank located in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang City.
While en route, Mr. A made a phone call to the accomplice inside the taxi, which aroused the suspicion of taxi driver Mr. D, who then reported it to 112 (police emergency number).
Mr. D informed the police, saying, "The passenger kept making suspicious phone calls and was carrying a large amount of cash," and "He just entered the bank, and it seems like voice phishing."
The police who received the report apprehended Mr. A at C Bank while he was attempting to transfer the 23 million won obtained through the voice phishing scam.
Police investigation revealed that Mr. A and his group deceived Mr. B by saying, "To receive a government-supported loan of 50 million won, you must first repay the existing debt of 23 million won, so meet the bank employee directly and hand over the money."
The police have urgently suspended the payment of 6 million won already transferred to the ringleader and seized the remaining 17 million won that was not yet transferred, which will be returned to Mr. B.
The police are questioning Mr. A about additional crimes to determine if there are more victims.
Meanwhile, the police advised that if someone demands upfront payment of existing loan amounts, fees, or requests bankbooks under the pretext of offering low-interest loans, do not comply. If you have suffered damage, immediately contact the bank's call center where the money was transferred or report to police at 112 to request a payment suspension.
